  1. Meditation based on the teachings of the
  2. Indian Shree Rajneesh (born Chaadra Mohan
  3. Jain), established in the early 1970s. Until
  4. 1989 he called himself Bhagwan (Hindi `God').
  5. His followers, who number about half a
  6. million worldwide, regard themselves as
  7. Sannyas, or Hindu ascetics; they wear orange
  8. robes and carry a string of prayer beads.
  9. They are not expected to observe any specific
  10. prohibitions but to be guided by their
  11. instincts. Rajneesh initially set up an
  12. ashram, or religious community, in Poona, NW
  13. India. He gained many followers, both Indian
  14. and Western, but his teachings also created
  15. considerable opposition, and in 1981 the
  16. Bhagwan moved his ashram to Oregon, USA,
  17. calling himself `guru of the rich'. He was
  18. deported in 1985 after pleading guilty to
  19. immigration fraud, and died 1990. He taught
  20. that there is a basic energy in the world,
  21. bio-energy, and that individuals can release
  22. this by dynamic meditation, which involves
  23. breathing exercises and explosive physical
  24. activity. His followers are encouraged to
  25. live in large groups, so that children may
  26. grow up in contact with a variety of people.
